"Tales of
the Unexpected" by Alan Copeland
Our
speaker Alan Copeland (left) is an experienced and well-accomplished photographer and
is well known for his work as a judge for the Camera Clubs and also as a
lecturer on Curiosities and other items of local interest. His many interests
include the research and photography of Curiosities throughout the Country and
also Preserved Railways and Steam Locomotives.
In
appreciation of his many years of service to the Whitchurch Hill Camera Club,
where he has been Chairman for the last 18 years, and his work with other Clubs
and Photographic Societies. The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain recently
honoured him with the prestigious APAGB, an award for outstanding service
presented to him and gained his Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society
(LRPS) in October 2002.
He
has also built up a reputation as an enthusiastic and entertaining speaker and
this became apparent in his presentation to the Probus Club of Ewell, where he
kept the membership of about 60 enthralled with his quick fire and well
presented slide show.

During
the lecture period he showed some beautiful pictures covering a wide range of
oddities and places around the countryside. Ranging from the old petrol station
in Stockbridge in Hampshire down to the Cats Cottage at Henfield in West Sussex.
As Alan said “This takes us back to the early days of motoring, which leads us
into the darker days of war. This is followed by a look at heroes, a couple of
stories about bread, one or two churches, a story about the King and the bed
bugs, hence the sign left at Kingsclere and finishes with a number of
fascinating buildings (including Cat's Cottage shown below) concluding with a
real grudge match involving the local vicar’s cat!"

Indeed
he covered over thirty places of interest, some with three or more shots of the
same location, each with an interesting story told in a humorous and riposte
manner. This report cannot do justice to such a scintillating presentation and
surfers of this site are well advised to peruse Alan’s site, which can be

The
vote of thanks duly responded by the memberships to well-deserved applause after
Alan had answered all the questions thrown at him!
