Our
talk on Wednesday April 6th 2011 was given by a charming
lady Elizabeth `Betty` Hurley.
The theme of Betty’s
talk was scheduled to be `Three Composers` but due to
problems with tape recordings it was changed to a very interesting
guide taking us down memory lane with recordings of songs from
yesteryear.
She explained that as
she suffered from Arthritis and her fee is donated to Arthritis
Research. She also jokingly said that despite her name she was not
to be confused with the lady that wears dresses held together with
safety pins and who goes out with Shane Warne!
For the next 30 minutes
or so she then introduced various singers and songs in the popular
style, from the early days of recording through to the 60`s.
The atmosphere turned
out to be quite nostalgic and certainly reminded us all of some of
our old favourites such as:-
Richard Tauber,
Kay Starr (Rock and Roll Song);
Gracie Fields (The Isle Of Capri) recorded when she was 70;
Bing Crosby and Al Jolson (The Spaniard that Blighted my Life)
recorded in the 1930`s;
Oscar Hammerstein (The Last Time I Saw Paris) he would have been one
of her three composers;
Phil Harris (Poker Club – Ya, Ya, Ya);
Jack Buchanan (And Her Mother Comes To) ;
A
very old recording by John Boles (It Happened in Monterey);
Edie Gorme (Blame it on the Bossa Nova) and finally
Tom Jones singing oh my Delilah which we all joined in. Or at least
those that remembered the words!
A fun talk presented in
a most charming way and our thanks were given by John Coomer.
